Criteria for this use

  1. 1 Port forwarding documented on the provider's official pages. Without an open port, you cannot accept incoming peers, and seeding suffers.
  2. 2 A kill switch on desktop and mobile that fails closed, plus a documented way to bind the torrent client to the VPN interface.
  3. 3 A written P2P policy: which servers allow BitTorrent traffic and what happens on the ones that do not.
  4. 4 Jurisdiction, an independent no-logs audit and its age, and the provider's record when courts or police asked for data.
  5. 5 Anonymous payment, such as cash, cryptocurrency, or gift or prepaid cards, and a refund window long enough to test your setup.

Our picks

1. Proton VPN

Best overall for torrenting

Why: Proton VPN documents port forwarding on all paid plans, on P2P servers, in its Windows, Linux and early-access macOS apps. Its setup guides cover qBittorrent, Vuze and uTorrent. It is Swiss, its apps are open source, and Securitum's fifth annual no-logs audit was published in June 2026.

Watch out: The forwarded port changes when you reconnect, and the mobile apps have no port forwarding. Servers are not RAM-only, and the free plan excludes P2P servers. The plan renews at $83.88 a year.

2. NordVPN

Best network

Panama-based VPN with NordLynx, RAM-only servers and six no-logs assurance engagements

8.1/10
Rank #3 of 12
Lowest price

Why: NordVPN's help center says you can use BitTorrent and most other peer-to-peer platforms on its servers. It reroutes P2P traffic away from servers that do not support it and offers a SOCKS5 proxy. It operates under Panamanian jurisdiction, runs RAM-only servers and has had six no-logs engagements, the latest by Deloitte in December 2025.

Watch out: Port forwarding comes only with the separate paid Dedicated Server add-on. The plan renews at $139.08 a year. The help center states that the service must never be used to bypass copyright regulations.

3. Private Internet Access

Best for port forwarding

US-based, Kape-owned VPN with open-source apps, unlimited devices and audited no-logs

8.1/10
Rank #4 of 12

Why: PIA builds port forwarding into its apps for selected servers, under Settings, Network, Request Port Forwarding. It allows unlimited devices and publishes open-source apps. It has three Deloitte no-logs reviews, the latest in December 2025, and had no logs to hand over in two US court cases.

Watch out: PIA is based in the United States, a Five Eyes member, and owned by Kape. Port forwarding is not available on every server, and the port can change when you reconnect. It no longer accepts cryptocurrency, so anonymous payment means a gift or prepaid card.

4. hide.me

Low-cost port forwarding

Malaysia-based VPN with an uncapped free plan and a Securitum-audited no-logs policy

Why: hide.me's desktop apps support dynamic port forwarding over UPnP or NAT-PMP, and you can limit it to specific applications. The company names P2P as a use case, and Securitum audited its no-logs policy in 2024. It accepts nine cryptocurrencies, and the 30-month plan costs $69.99 and renews at the same price.

Watch out: Port forwarding works only on desktop and only with Premium, and the no-logs audit is from June 2024. The official pages do not say whether servers run from RAM. hide.me is based in Malaysia, and it does not document its 2015 no-logs certification.

The Best VPN on Earth.

6.5/10
Rank #8 of 12
Lowest price
$5.75/moPro Yearly

Why: Windscribe Pro includes temporary, or ephemeral, port forwarding that lasts seven days at a time. Permanent ports need a static IP add-on, which costs $24 a year for a datacenter IP. It also has an always-on firewall kill switch on desktop, RAM-only servers, cash and cryptocurrency payment, and a free 10 GB tier.

Watch out: No independent no-logs audit has been published, and refunds apply only within 7 days and under 10 GB of use. Windscribe is in Canada, a Five Eyes member. Two of its servers were seized in Ukraine in 2021 with an OpenVPN key on disk, before it moved to RAM-only servers.

The best VPN for torrenting is one that passes these tests:

  • It documents port forwarding.
  • It fails closed, which means it blocks all traffic when the VPN connection drops.
  • It says in writing which servers allow BitTorrent traffic.
  • Its no-logs claim has survived an audit or a courtroom.

On 31 October 2026, five providers pass those tests on verified data: Proton VPN, NordVPN, Private Internet Access, hide.me and Windscribe.

Only four of the twelve providers we track document port forwarding in their apps at all. That is why this list looks different from a general ranking. ExpressVPN, which leads our overall table, offers it only on a router. Surfshark, Mullvad, IVPN, IPVanish, CyberGhost and PrivadoVPN do not offer it.

We do not condone downloading or sharing copyrighted material without permission. BitTorrent moves Linux images, game updates, public-domain archives and large open datasets. The law on what you share is the same with or without a VPN.

Copyright notice. We do not condone downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission. P2P and media players have many legal uses. Follow the law in your country and the terms of the services you use.

What matters for torrenting, and why

Port forwarding. Peers are the other people sharing the same file. A BitTorrent client behind a VPN can connect out to peers, but it cannot accept connections in. The VPN server’s firewall drops incoming traffic that nobody asked for. Port forwarding opens one port on the VPN server and sends it to your client.

Proton’s support page explains the use: “it’s mainly used for P2P apps like BitTorrent”. PIA’s guide says a forwarded port allows connections with both active and passive peers. That decides whether the swarm, everyone sharing the file, can reach you. It is also the difference between seeding, which means uploading to others, and merely leeching, which means only downloading. If you only download popular public files, you can live without it. If you seed, you need it.

A kill switch, and binding the client to the tunnel. A kill switch blocks your internet if the VPN connection drops. Our data records a kill switch on desktop for every pick. Proton’s P2P page adds a warning that applies to all of them. A client that uses your regular connection rather than the VPN “can expose your real IP address while torrenting, even when kill switch is enabled”. That is why Proton’s guides tell you to bind qBittorrent to the VPN network interface. The kill switch stops traffic when the tunnel drops. Binding stops traffic from ever leaving by another route.

A written P2P policy. Providers differ on whether BitTorrent is allowed everywhere or only on marked servers. NordVPN’s help center says “when you connect to NordVPN’s servers, you can use BitTorrent and most other peer-to-peer platforms”. It adds that users of P2P traffic on servers that do not support it “may be rerouted”. Proton marks P2P servers with a double-arrow icon and requires one for port forwarding. hide.me names P2P as a use case for its dynamic port forwarding. Windscribe’s port-forwarding page lists game and media servers rather than torrenting. PIA’s guide speaks of peer-to-peer file sharing without naming BitTorrent.

Every provider on this page expects you to obey copyright law. ExpressVPN’s torrent-client page states that the service “should not be used as a means of copyright circumvention”. NordVPN’s says it “should never be used to bypass copyright regulations”.

Jurisdiction, audits and the record under pressure. Logs are what a copyright claimant or a court would ask for. Proton is in Switzerland, NordVPN in Panama and hide.me in Malaysia. All three sit outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes intelligence-sharing groups. PIA, in the United States, and Windscribe, in Canada, sit inside the Five Eyes.

Audit dates matter as much as names:

  • Proton’s fifth annual no-logs audit was published in June 2026.
  • NordVPN’s sixth engagement is dated December 2025.
  • PIA’s third Deloitte review is dated December 2025.
  • hide.me’s Securitum audit is from June 2024.
  • Windscribe has published no no-logs audit at all.

PIA’s claim has also been tested in court. In a 2016 FBI subpoena and a 2018 federal trial, it had no logs to produce. Our privacy guide weighs these records in more depth.

Anonymous payment. The options vary by provider:

  • NordVPN accepts cryptocurrency, and in some stores a prepaid card bought with cash.
  • hide.me accepts nine cryptocurrencies.
  • Windscribe takes cash and cryptocurrency.
  • Proton sells credits for cash or Bitcoin.
  • PIA dropped cryptocurrency but accepts gift and prepaid cards for one-off purchases.

Leaks. A torrent client shows your address to every peer. Before you trust a setup, run our IPv6 leak test and VPN check with the client running. IPv6 is the newer type of internet address. PIA blocks IPv6 while connected. NordVPN says it does not support IPv6, and our data could not confirm whether its apps block it. Proton, Windscribe and hide.me send IPv6 through the tunnel.

Port forwarding: every provider, from the data

We checked each provider’s official pages on 31 October 2026. These providers offer port forwarding in their apps:

  • Private Internet Access offers it in the app on selected servers.
  • Proton VPN offers it on all paid plans, on P2P servers, in the Windows, Linux and early-access macOS apps.
  • hide.me offers dynamic forwarding in its desktop apps, on Premium only. It uses UPnP or NAT-PMP, standard ways for an app to open a port automatically.
  • Windscribe offers ephemeral forwarding on Pro, lasting seven days at a time. Permanent ports need a static IP add-on: $24 a year for a datacenter IP or $96 for a residential one.

The rest offer it only in a limited way, or not at all:

  • NordVPN offers it only through its separate paid Dedicated Server add-on, not on standard servers.
  • ExpressVPN offers it only in its router app and on Aircove routers, and that forwarding runs outside the VPN tunnel.
  • Mullvad removed port forwarding on 29 May 2023, saying “individuals have frequently used this feature to host undesirable content and malicious services”. It removed existing ports on 1 July 2023.
  • Surfshark says it does not support port forwarding, in a blog post dated 9 September 2026.
  • IVPN, IPVanish, CyberGhost and PrivadoVPN document no port forwarding at all.

Pick by pick: what the verified data says

Proton VPN combines port forwarding with the strongest trust record on this list. Its support page documents the feature on all paid plans, on P2P servers only. It works in the Windows and early-access macOS apps, and on Linux in both the graphical app and the command-line tool. Proton’s step-by-step guides for qBittorrent, Vuze and uTorrent tell you to disable UPnP and NAT-PMP in the client. You then enter the port the app shows.

The port “usually changes when you reconnect”, so you update the client each session. The feature does not work with NAT type 2. P2P servers carry the double-arrow icon in every app, including iOS, where Apple does not allow torrent clients anyway.

Proton AG is Swiss, every app is open source, and Securitum’s fifth annual no-logs audit came out in June 2026. The 2-year Plus plan costs $83.76, or $3.49 a month, and renews at $83.88 a year, with a 30-day refund. Servers are not RAM-only, since Proton uses full-disk encryption instead. The free plan has no P2P servers, and there is no port forwarding on Android or iOS. See the Proton VPN review.

NordVPN is here for its network and its audits, not for port forwarding. It sells port forwarding only as part of a Dedicated Server add-on. Its help center says BitTorrent is allowed on its servers, and P2P traffic that lands on a server without P2P support is rerouted. It publishes SOCKS5 proxy settings for BitTorrent and uTorrent clients. It also warns that the service must never be used to bypass copyright regulations.

Deloitte’s December 2024 engagement explicitly covered the P2P servers. The December 2025 report is the sixth no-logs engagement since 2018. Servers are RAM-only, and the company is under Panamanian jurisdiction. In October 2024, NordVPN disclosed that a binding Panamanian warrant obliged it to hand over the user data it held in one criminal case.

The 27-month Basic plan costs $94.23, or $3.49 a month, and renews at $139.08 a year. The 30-day refund covers the initial purchase. Cryptocurrency and a prepaid card bought with cash are accepted. See the NordVPN review.

Private Internet Access is the pick if port forwarding is the reason you are here. Its guide, updated 10 August 2025, documents the switch in every desktop and Android app. Go to Settings, Network, Request Port Forwarding. Then connect to a server that supports it and read the port under the VPN address. The port may change after a reconnect.

PIA also offers unlimited devices, open-source apps, RAM-only servers and a kill switch on desktop and mobile. It blocks IPv6 while connected. Three Deloitte reviews, in June 2022, April 2024 and December 2025, support the no-logs claim, and so do the 2016 and 2018 court cases.

The 40-month plan costs $81.20, or $2.03 a month, and renews at $81.20 every three years. The 1-year plan is $47.88 and the monthly plan is $11.95. New subscribers get a 30-day refund.

The downsides: PIA is based in Denver, inside the Five Eyes, and owned by Kape Technologies. Port forwarding is not available on every server, and PIA’s guide does not list which ones have it. It no longer accepts cryptocurrency, so anonymous payment means a gift or prepaid card. See the PIA review.

hide.me offers the cheapest documented port forwarding. Its feature page describes dynamic port forwarding over UPnP or NAT-PMP in the desktop apps. The port is opened on hide.me’s server rather than your router. You can “limit access to specific applications”, and the page names “VoIP, P2P, and gaming” as the use cases.

The company, eVenture Ltd, is registered in Labuan, Malaysia. Securitum audited the no-logs policy between March and June 2024. A kill switch and StealthGuard, which binds apps to the VPN, are documented. hide.me accepts nine cryptocurrencies. The 30-month plan costs $69.99, or $2.33 a month, and hide.me guarantees in writing that it renews at the same price. A first order gets a 30-day refund, and the plan covers 10 devices.

The weaknesses: port forwarding works only on desktop and only with Premium. The official pages do not say whether servers run from RAM. The 2015 no-logs certification is a one-line claim with no report. The only real audit is now more than two years old. See the hide.me review.

Windscribe comes last: its features are good, but its trust record is thin. Pro includes ephemeral port forwarding that “lasts for 7 days at a time”. Permanent ports need a static IP, sold separately for $24 or $96 a year. The desktop firewall fails closed, servers are RAM-only, and you can pay with cash or cryptocurrency. Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year, which is $5.75 a month, with no introductory bait. The free tier gives 10 GB a month to test with.

Against that, no no-logs audit has ever been published. Leviathan audited the apps in 2021 and 2022, and Packetlabs audited the server stack in 2024. The refund lasts 7 days and applies only under 10 GB of use. Windscribe Limited is in Toronto, inside the Five Eyes.

In June 2021, two Ukrainian servers were seized with an OpenVPN server key on an unencrypted disk. That incident pushed Windscribe to RAM-only servers. A Greek court dismissed charges against its founder in 2025, and a Dutch server was seized in February 2026. Windscribe says no user data was involved in either case. See the Windscribe review.

Community

Forum threads asking for the best VPN for torrenting tend to reach the same shortlist as the data. They name PIA and Proton VPN for port forwarding and Mullvad for anonymity, and they warn about providers that quietly removed the feature. We do not use Reddit or any forum as a source for a number or a feature on this site. When a thread claims something, we check the provider’s page and record what it says.

The data corrects two claims we see often. Mullvad no longer offers port forwarding, which it removed on 29 May 2023. NordVPN does not offer it on standard servers.

What to avoid

Torrenting on a server that does not allow it. NordVPN reroutes P2P traffic from servers without P2P support. Proton requires a P2P server for port forwarding. Use the marked servers.

A client that is not bound to the VPN interface. Proton’s warning above applies to every provider. A kill switch does not stop a client that is set up to use the plain network.

UPnP and NAT-PMP left on in the client. Proton tells you to disable both and use the port the app shows. hide.me uses them on purpose, inside its own app. Follow each provider’s guide.

Free VPNs and no-logs claims without an audit. PrivadoVPN has published no audit, and Windscribe’s audits do not cover logging. Pay for the service you will trust with your address.

Forgetting the law. A VPN hides your address from peers, but it does not change what you may share. Rights holders act against infringement whether or not a VPN is involved.

Setup notes

Install the app and enable the kill switch. Where offered, also enable the setting that binds or restricts apps to the VPN. On hide.me that is StealthGuard, and Proton gives guidance for qBittorrent.

Then enable port forwarding:

  • PIA: Settings, Network, Request Port Forwarding.
  • Proton: the port-forwarding toggle, on a P2P server.
  • hide.me: the desktop app’s dynamic port forwarding.
  • Windscribe: request an ephemeral port on Pro, or set a port on a static IP.

In the torrent client, turn off UPnP and NAT-PMP unless the provider says otherwise. Enter the forwarded port as the listening port, and bind the client to the VPN adapter. Connect, then check with our VPN check and IPv6 leak test while the client runs. Expect the port to change when you reconnect with PIA and Proton. With Windscribe’s ephemeral option, it expires after seven days.

How we chose

The picks are ordered by our score, shown above. We included providers whose official pages document port forwarding in the app. NordVPN qualifies another way, with a written P2P policy, specialty P2P servers and a no-logs audit that covered them. Scores come from the published methodology.

ExpressVPN leads the overall table, but we excluded it. Its port forwarding exists only on routers and outside the tunnel. Its official pages, loaded on 31 October 2026, carry no P2P policy beyond the copyright statement. We also excluded these providers:

  • Surfshark: no port forwarding, confirmed by its own blog.
  • IVPN: none documented.
  • IPVanish: none documented, and its 2016 incident involved handing over connection data.
  • CyberGhost: none documented.
  • PrivadoVPN: none documented, and it has no audit.

We excluded Mullvad for the same feature gap, with regret. Its no-email accounts, cash payment and a 2023 police search that found nothing make it the privacy benchmark. If you do not need port forwarding, it belongs on your shortlist. See the Mullvad review and our privacy guide.

Proton VPN and NordVPN pay us a commission on some purchases. Private Internet Access, hide.me and Windscribe currently do not. The order is computed, not chosen. See how we make money and the best-of hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to torrent with a VPN?
BitTorrent and VPNs are legal in most countries. Sharing copyrighted material without permission is not, with or without a VPN. We do not condone infringement. A VPN hides your address from other peers and your traffic from your ISP. It does not change what you are allowed to share.
Do I need port forwarding to torrent?
Not to download popular public files. You need it to accept incoming connections. Those let other peers reach you and keep upload ratios healthy. Proton VPN, PIA, hide.me and Windscribe document it in their apps. NordVPN sells it only as a dedicated-server add-on.
Which VPNs have port forwarding in 2026?
We verified this on 31 October 2026. Private Internet Access, Proton VPN, hide.me and Windscribe offer it. Proton VPN limits it to paid plans, P2P servers and desktop apps. hide.me offers it in its desktop apps on Premium. Windscribe has temporary ports on Pro and permanent ones with a static IP. ExpressVPN offers it only on routers, NordVPN only through a paid add-on, and Mullvad removed it on 29 May 2023.
What is the best VPN for torrenting according to Reddit?
We do not use Reddit as a source. The names that recur in forum threads match the data, with one correction. PIA and Proton VPN come up for port forwarding, and Mullvad for anonymity. But Mullvad no longer offers port forwarding, so it suits downloading more than seeding.
Does a kill switch stop my IP leaking in a torrent client?
It stops traffic when the tunnel drops. But Proton VPN warns that a client set up to use your regular connection can expose your real IP address, even with the kill switch on. Bind the client to the VPN interface and test with our VPN check while the client runs.
Why did Mullvad remove port forwarding?
Mullvad announced on 29 May 2023 that individuals had frequently used the feature to host undesirable content and malicious services. That brought contact from law enforcement, blacklisted IP addresses and canceled hosting. Mullvad removed new forwards immediately and existing ones on 1 July 2023.
