What is my IP address?

This is the address websites see right now. If you use a VPN, it should be the VPN server's address and location, not your home's.

What your IP address reveals

An IP address identifies the connection you are using, not you personally. Combined with a geolocation database it usually gives the country and often the city of the network that owns the address, which is why websites can show local prices, block content by region or guess your time zone. It also tells every site you visit which internet provider or VPN company is routing your traffic.

Why the location can be wrong

The location comes from commercial databases, not from GPS. Mobile carriers and large internet providers route traffic through hubs far from where you are. Some VPN companies also use "virtual" locations, where the server is really somewhere else. A city that is a few hundred kilometers off is normal. A wrong country usually means a VPN, a proxy or a work network.

What to do if the result is not what you expect

  • If your VPN is on and you still see your real city or ISP, the tunnel is not active. Reconnect, enable the kill switch, and run the full VPN check.
  • If the country is right but the city is far away, that is usually normal. Check the provider's server list for the exact location.
  • If you see an IPv6 address while your VPN only hands out IPv4, read the IPv6 leak test: traffic may be bypassing the tunnel.

Privacy of this tool

Loading this page sends one request to our own server, which answers with the address and approximate location it sees for your connection. We store nothing: no logs of the result, no cookies, no third-party scripts. The location comes from the hosting provider's geolocation headers rather than from a database we run, so it is only as good as that lookup. If you want the same information without any website involved, your VPN app shows the server you are connected to.
