Criteria for this use
- 1 WireGuard or a similar modern protocol in the apps, such as NordLynx, Lightway or Dausos. The protocol sets the minimum delay, or latency, that a VPN adds.
- 2 A large network with servers near the game servers you use. We quote published counts, not measured latency, because our lab has not run yet.
- 3 Router support for consoles. PlayStation and Xbox cannot run VPN apps, so the provider must document a router setup or sell a router.
- 4 Obfuscation for university, dorm and workplace networks that block VPN traffic. CyberGhost documents none and is excluded for that reason.
- 5 Port forwarding, but only if you host games or run a server. Private Internet Access is the only pick that documents it, and ordinary play does not need it.
Our picks
1. ExpressVPN
Best for consoles via routers

The best VPN for gaming is ExpressVPN if you play on a console. Its Lightway protocol runs on every app and on its own Aircove and Fortify routers. ExpressVPN states that these routers are compatible with PlayStation and Xbox. Obfuscation is automatic, which helps on dorm and campus networks that block VPNs.
Each of the other picks has its own strength:
- Proton VPN has the largest network we track and documents router setup on every plan, including the free one.
- NordVPN pairs NordLynx with the widest choice of obfuscated routes.
- Private Internet Access (PIA) is the only pick that documents port forwarding, which you need only to host.
- Surfshark covers unlimited devices and publishes console guides.
We have not measured latency through any of these services. A VPN normally raises ping rather than lowering it, because your traffic travels to a VPN server before it reaches the game server. The cases where it helps are the exception, as Surfshark’s own PlayStation page admits.
Claims that a VPN gets you “easier lobbies” in Warzone or other matchmade games are unverified by us. No provider’s official page promises them either. Everything below is from the providers’ official pages and records, verified 31 October 2026.
What matters for gaming, and why
The protocol. A VPN adds an extra stop and an encryption step to every packet of data. The protocol decides how much that step costs. All five picks offer a WireGuard-class protocol:
- WireGuard itself at Proton VPN, PIA and Surfshark.
- NordLynx at NordVPN. NordVPN describes it as built on the WireGuard framework, with a 4,000-line codebase and its own double-NAT system. Post-quantum encryption was added as an option in 2025.
- Lightway at ExpressVPN, rewritten in Rust on wolfSSL, with ML-KEM post-quantum protection by default. It keeps a dropped session idle rather than ending it, so it resumes on the same server.
Post-quantum protection uses a newer way of agreeing on encryption keys, designed to resist future quantum computers. Surfshark’s Dausos adds AEGIS-256X2 encryption and a claimed “up to 30% faster” connection. On 31 October 2026 it was available only in the macOS app.
Mullvad has been WireGuard-only since it removed OpenVPN on 15 January 2026. IVPN, Windscribe, CyberGhost, IPVanish, hide.me and PrivadoVPN all offer WireGuard too. A modern protocol is now standard, so it does not separate the providers.
Servers near the game servers. Latency is the delay between your device and the game server, and it is mostly a matter of distance. The useful question is whether there is a VPN server in the same city or region as the game server you play on. These were the published network sizes on 31 October 2026:
- Proton VPN: 21,722 servers in 149 countries
- CyberGhost: 9,600 in 100
- NordVPN: 7,242 in 150
- Surfshark: 4,500 in 100
- IPVanish: 3,650 in 112
- hide.me: 2,600 in 57
- Mullvad: 566 in 50
- PrivadoVPN: 233 in 49
- IVPN: 89 in 42
ExpressVPN, PIA and Windscribe publish no server count. ExpressVPN covers 113 countries. PIA covers 113 countries and 180 locations, including all 50 US states. Windscribe covers 69 countries. Counts say nothing about load or peering, which is how well networks connect to each other. We have measured none of them.
Consoles. PlayStation and Xbox cannot run VPN apps, and the providers say so:
- ExpressVPN: “PlayStation consoles don’t support VPN apps” and “Xbox consoles don’t support VPN apps directly.”
- NordVPN’s help center: consoles “do not support built-in VPN functionality.”
- Surfshark: “PlayStation consoles don’t natively support VPNs” and “Xbox consoles don’t have native VPN support.”
So the VPN has to run on the router or be shared from a PC. How well a provider documents that is one of our criteria.
Obfuscation. University, dorm, office and some hotel networks block VPN traffic. Obfuscation disguises VPN traffic to get it past these blocks. Each pick has its own method:
- ExpressVPN obfuscates automatically on every server.
- NordVPN has NordWhisper and obfuscated servers.
- Proton VPN has Stealth, which runs WireGuard over TLS.
- PIA adds an SSL layer.
- Surfshark has NoBorders and obfuscated servers.
Mullvad, IVPN, Windscribe, IPVanish and hide.me document their own methods. CyberGhost documents no obfuscation and PrivadoVPN none either, so neither qualifies here.
Port forwarding. Port forwarding opens a port on the VPN server so that outside connections can reach your device. You need it only to host a Minecraft or dedicated server, or a game that must accept incoming connections. This is what each provider documents:
- PIA documents it on selected servers.
- Proton VPN offers it.
- Windscribe offers it with a paid static IP.
- hide.me offers dynamic port forwarding in its desktop apps.
- NordVPN offers it only through a separate Dedicated Server add-on.
- ExpressVPN offers it only on its router app, outside the tunnel.
- Surfshark does not offer it at all.
- Mullvad disabled it in May 2023.
DDoS and swatting. A DDoS attack floods your connection with traffic to knock you offline. In games that connect players directly, a VPN hides your home IP address from the lobby. That is the real security benefit of gaming through a VPN, and NordVPN’s Xbox page and PIA’s gaming page both describe it. It protects your address. It does not protect the game company’s servers.
Ping: what a VPN does to latency
Ping is the time data takes to travel from your device to the game server and back. Every packet you send through a VPN goes to the VPN server first, then to the game server. The reply comes back the same way. If the VPN server is in your city and the game server is across the country, the detour adds a few milliseconds. If the VPN server is on another continent, it adds a lot.
A VPN lowers ping only in one narrow case: when your internet provider’s route to the game server is worse than the route through the VPN server. That happens with poor peering or deliberate throttling. Surfshark’s own PlayStation FAQ puts it plainly: “Sometimes — a VPN can lower ping if it routes your connection through a less congested path.” It notes that the VPN adds overhead, so results vary. Its Xbox FAQ says a VPN is “usually unlikely to boost your gaming speed.”
PIA’s gaming page makes the same conditional claim about congested routes at internet providers. ExpressVPN’s console pages talk about lag and “low latency” without numbers. None of the five picks publishes latency measurements, and neither do we yet. When the lab runs, this page will show the ping added by each provider’s nearest server. Until then, follow three rules:
- Connect to the VPN server closest to the game server.
- Use the WireGuard-class protocol.
- Expect ping to go up a little, not down.
The same caution applies to “easier lobbies.” Guides claim that connecting through a VPN to a quiet region changes who you are matched with in Warzone and similar games. We have not verified that, and no provider’s official page promises it. Matchmaking rules belong to the publisher, which can change or enforce them. The far-away server such a trick needs also adds the latency you are trying to avoid.
Consoles: PlayStation and Xbox need a router
There are two documented ways to put a PS5 or Xbox behind a VPN. Every pick documents at least one.
A router running the VPN. ExpressVPN sells Aircove and Fortify routers with the VPN built in. The Aircove page states that they are compatible with PlayStation and Xbox. It lets you sort devices into up to five groups, each with its own VPN location. It also says an active subscription is still required.
Proton VPN’s router article covers AsusWRT, AsusWRT-Merlin, DD-WRT, FreshTomato, GL.iNet, MikroTik, OpenWRT, OPNsense, pfSense and Vilfo. It says router connections “are available on all Proton VPN plans, including Proton Free.” It calls them “useful for devices that don’t support VPN apps, like smart TVs and game consoles.”
NordVPN’s help center tells Xbox and PlayStation owners to install NordVPN on the router and connect the console to its Wi-Fi. It has manual guides for DD-WRT and OpenWrt and a pre-configured router option.
Surfshark’s guide covers TP-Link, GL.iNet, Asus, OpenWrt, DD-WRT, Tomato, pfSense and others, with OpenVPN and WireGuard. It says a router VPN protects “game consoles, and IoT devices that don’t support VPN apps.”
PIA supports routers with built-in VPN clients or open-source firmware. It recommends FlashRouters that come with PIA installed. A router counts as one device on the plan.
Sharing a PC’s connection. ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark all document connecting the console to a Windows PC that runs the VPN. You connect over an Ethernet cable or a Wi-Fi hotspot. Surfshark also documents Mac Internet Sharing. The PC has to stay on while you play.
Smart DNS is not a VPN. ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer “doesn’t include VPN encryption.” It changes your apparent location for streaming apps on the console, not the route your game traffic takes. It does nothing for ping or DDoS protection.
Pick by pick: what the verified data says
We checked every price and plan below on 31 October 2026.
ExpressVPN is first because it does the most for consoles. Lightway runs on the apps and on its router firmware, and the Aircove page states compatibility with PlayStation and Xbox. Device groups let the console use a different location from the family’s phones. The PlayStation and Xbox pages document the PC-sharing route and MediaStreamer as alternatives.
Obfuscation is automatic on every server, and Lightway has post-quantum protection by default. Lightway Turbo on Windows uses multiple lanes to carry more data at once. There are servers in 113 countries, but ExpressVPN publishes no count. There is no port forwarding inside the tunnel and no multi-hop, which routes traffic through more than one server. The only plan on the order page was 28 months of Basic at $2.99 a month, or $83.72, renewing at $99.95 a year. Basic covers 10 devices, and website purchases get a 30-day refund.
Proton VPN has the biggest published network: 21,722 servers in 149 countries on its live counter. It has the Stealth obfuscation protocol and port forwarding. It also has the only router guide that explicitly covers the free plan. VPN Accelerator, which Proton says improves speed over long distances, is a paid feature, and so is split tunneling.
The free plan is one device at medium speed. VPN Plus cost $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan, or $83.76, and renews at $83.88 a year. The monthly plan is $9.99, and refunds are 30 days. Post-quantum encryption is on the 2026 roadmap, not in the apps.
NordVPN offers NordLynx with its post-quantum toggle, and NordWhisper for networks that block VPN traffic. It has 7,242 servers in 150 countries. Its help center documents console setups for Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, through a router or a Windows PC. Its Xbox page also advertises DDoS protection. On Windows, its App Kill Switch can close programs you choose, such as Steam, if the VPN drops.
There is no port forwarding on standard servers and no router app, and IPv6 is not supported. The Basic 2-year plan was $3.49 a month, or $94.23, and renews at $139.08 a year. The monthly plan is $14.99, and refunds are 30 days.
Private Internet Access is the pick for anyone who hosts. It documents port forwarding on selected servers. It has WireGuard and OpenVPN with an obfuscation layer, open-source apps and unlimited connections. Servers cover 113 countries and 180 locations, including every US state. Its router page recommends FlashRouters with PIA pre-installed. Its gaming page links console guides for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Steam Deck and more.
The 3-year plan was $2.03 a month, or $79 up front, and renews at $79 every three years. The 1-year plan is $47.88 and monthly is $11.95. Refunds are 30 days. PIA publishes no server count and has no post-quantum encryption. The company is based in the US and owned by Kape Technologies.
Surfshark offers WireGuard with post-quantum protection, Dausos on macOS, and NoBorders and obfuscated servers. It has 4,500 servers in 100 countries and allows unlimited devices. It publishes a detailed router guide and PlayStation and Xbox pages. Those pages document router and PC-sharing setups and are honest about ping.
Surfshark has no port forwarding, which its blog confirmed on 9 September 2026. Dausos is not yet on Windows or routers. The Starter plan was $2.49 a month for 27 months, or $67.23. The pricing page does not state the renewal price. The monthly plan is $16.45, and refunds are 30 days.
What to avoid
Buying a VPN to lower ping or change lobbies. A VPN usually makes latency worse, and the lobby effect is unverified. Buy one to hide your IP address, to get past blocked networks or for privacy on your console. Treat any speed gain as luck.
CyberGhost on a network that blocks VPNs. It documents no obfuscation. That is why it is not a pick, despite 9,600 servers and a 45-day refund. On an open home network it is fine, and its router page covers consoles over OpenVPN.
Expecting Dausos on a console. Surfshark’s new protocol is macOS-only as of 31 October 2026. Routers and consoles get WireGuard or OpenVPN.
Assuming port forwarding. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark do not offer it in the tunnel. If you host, choose PIA, Proton VPN or Windscribe, and check which servers support it.
Free VPNs for gaming. Proton VPN’s free plan is one device at medium speed. The other free tiers we track are capped at 10 GB a month, and a single evening of downloads uses that. Proton Free does allow router setup, so it is a reasonable way to test a console setup before paying.
Judging by the first-term price. First-term prices here run from $2.03 to $3.49 a month. Renewals run from $79 every three years at PIA to $139.08 a year at NordVPN, and Surfshark does not state its renewal. The comparison hub shows both numbers.
Setup notes
- On a PC: install the app and pick the WireGuard-class protocol: Lightway, NordLynx or WireGuard. Connect to the server nearest the game server, not the one nearest you.
- For competitive play: if the VPN adds ping you notice, add the game to the split-tunnel exclusion list. Keep the VPN on for Discord and the browser. NordVPN’s help center gives a split-tunneling example with banking apps on one side and Discord or games on the other.
- On a console: flash or set up a router with the provider’s WireGuard or OpenVPN profile, then put the console on that Wi-Fi. On ExpressVPN’s Aircove, use device groups to keep the rest of the house out of the tunnel. Or share a Windows PC’s VPN connection over Ethernet, which every pick documents.
- For hosting: turn on PIA’s port forwarding on a supported server and note the port the app assigns. Then enter it in the game or server settings.
- On a campus network: switch to the obfuscated option and expect higher latency than with the plain protocol. That option is automatic at ExpressVPN. It is NordWhisper or obfuscated servers at NordVPN, Stealth at Proton VPN, NoBorders at Surfshark and obfuscation at PIA.
- Finally: confirm the tunnel holds under load with our VPN check and WebRTC leak test. WebRTC is the browser technology behind voice and video calls. Voice chat in a browser can expose your address through WebRTC, even when the game traffic goes through the tunnel.
If you also stream, the streaming page covers the services each provider documents.
How we chose
We rank the picks by our score, which is shown above. We include only providers that do three things:
- offer a WireGuard-class protocol in their apps
- document obfuscation
- document a router setup for devices without apps
The criteria at the top of the page break ties. CyberGhost fails the obfuscation test, and so does PrivadoVPN. We excluded both for that reason, not for their scores.
hide.me, Windscribe, IPVanish, IVPN and Mullvad meet the filter but rank below the five picks on the overall score. Mullvad meets it through its WireGuard configuration files for routers and its UDP-over-TCP, Shadowsocks and QUIC obfuscation. Mullvad’s 5-device limit and 566-server network also weigh against it where latency matters, and so do IVPN’s 89 gateways.
Scores come from our published methodology. In it, security counts for 15 percent of the weight and apps for 10 percent. Speed is excluded until the lab runs. Prices are the lowest effective monthly price on each pricing page on 31 October 2026. Every pick lists its renewal price or says that it is not stated.
Affiliate relationships do not influence anything on this page. ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, NordVPN and Surfshark pay us a commission on some purchases. Private Internet Access currently does not, and it is on the list. See how we make money and the rest of the best-of hub.
