NordVPN Moves Obfuscated Servers to NordWhisper on Linux 6.0

NordVPN’s obfuscated servers no longer run on OpenVPN. They now use NordWhisper, NordVPN’s own protocol for networks that block VPN traffic. The switch reached Linux with version 6.0.0 on 22 October 2026, according to the NordVPN for Linux release notes. It is the latest step in a rollout that began on iOS in July.

A NordVPN support article on the upgrade adds a consequence that the release notes leave out: “you will not be able to connect to our obfuscated servers via the OpenVPN manual connection method.”

What happened

The iOS release notes for NordVPN 9.8, dated 1 July 2026, said: “Obfuscated servers now run on NordWhisper instead of OpenVPN. Why? To give you better speed and more locations.” On 3 July, TechRadar’s Monica J. White reported that CTO Marijus Briedis expected the change to reach Android, Windows and macOS “within the following weeks”. The support article gives the reason for the change. The category “relied on the OpenVPN (TCP/UDP) protocol”, which “could be slower and was limited to a smaller set of servers”.

NordVPN’s Linux app works from the command line. It had separate settings for technology, protocol and obfuscation. A NordVPN blog post of 6 October 2026, “NordVPN 6.0 for Linux: What’s changing”, said version 6.0 would make three changes:

  • remove the nordvpn set obfuscate toggle
  • merge nordvpn set technology into nordvpn set protocol
  • drop the separate P2P server group, while P2P traffic is “not being removed or restricted”

The 6.0.0 entry of 22 October confirms it: “Obfuscated servers now run on NordWhisper instead of OpenVPN XOR. Obfuscation kicks in automatically when you select NordWhisper, so the nordvpn set obfuscate command is no longer needed — and it’s gone.”

Why it matters

For most people, only the protocol underneath changes. You open the app, pick Obfuscated Servers and connect, as before. But anyone who built a manual OpenVPN connection to an obfuscated server, on a router or in a third-party client, has lost that route. Linux users with scripts that call nordvpn set obfuscate or nordvpn set technology must rewrite them before upgrading.

NordWhisper also has limits of its own. NordVPN’s protocol page says it “is not compatible with features such as Dedicated IP and Onion Over VPN”. The page adds that it “may be slower than protocols like NordLynx or OpenVPN”. It also says NordWhisper is “specifically designed to handle local, VPN-specific restrictions, not broader regional or nationwide internet controls”.

Do not read this as a fix for China. On 31 October 2026, NordVPN’s help center still described its iOS and Android apps as “fully blocked in China”. Our best VPN for China page records this.

What to do

On Linux, update to 6.0.0. Then run nordvpn set protocol nordwhisper, followed by nordvpn connect.

If you relied on a manual OpenVPN profile for an obfuscated server, move that device to the NordVPN app or to a standard OpenVPN server. Then confirm the result with our VPN check tool.

If you use Dedicated IP or Onion Over VPN, switch back to NordLynx or OpenVPN once you are off the restricted network. If NordWhisper will not connect, our NordVPN not connecting guide gives the order of protocols to try.

What we changed

We added three points to the security section of our NordVPN review:

  • Obfuscated servers have run on NordWhisper since iOS 9.8, released on 1 July 2026, and Linux 6.0.0, released on 22 October 2026.
  • Manual OpenVPN connections can no longer reach them.
  • NordWhisper does not work with Dedicated IP or Onion Over VPN.

We added the manual-connection limit to the “fallback that is not an app” paragraph of the best VPN for China page. We also recorded it in NordVPN’s data record, with the support article as the source. NordVPN’s score is unaffected.

Frequently asked questions

Do NordVPN obfuscated servers still work with OpenVPN?
No, not any more. NordVPN's support center says the Obfuscated Servers category now runs on NordWhisper. You cannot connect to those servers with a manual OpenVPN configuration. In the apps, you select Obfuscated Servers as before. On Linux, you first run nordvpn set protocol nordwhisper.
Does NordWhisper work in China?
NordVPN does not claim that. Its NordWhisper page says the protocol is designed for local, VPN-specific restrictions, such as office or public Wi-Fi filters. It is not designed for broader regional or nationwide internet controls. On 31 October 2026, NordVPN's help center described its iOS and Android apps as fully blocked in China.
