NordVPN Not Connecting: Fixes in the Right Order (2026)

NordVPN not connecting or stuck on Connecting? Fixes in its help center's order: protocol, obfuscated servers, kill switch, DNS and a reinstall.

By VPN Clue Editorial Team Published Last verified

When NordVPN will not connect, stop pressing Quick Connect. Pick two or three specific countries by hand, and then change the protocol. NordVPN’s own help center lists this fix first on every platform, and it is the one that works most often.

Everything below follows the order of NordVPN’s “I can’t connect” articles for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Android TV. We also spell out the side effects of the kill switch, NordWhisper, Meshnet and custom DNS, which NordVPN’s pages only hint at.

We checked every menu path and fact on this page against those articles on 31 October 2026. The plan, device and refund numbers come from our NordVPN record, verified the same day. We have not yet run NordVPN through our lab, so nothing here is a speed or streaming test result.

Symptom

NordVPN describes the failure differently on each platform. The wording matters, because it tells you which help article NordVPN support will send you to:

  • Windows: error notifications, or the app stuck on the “Connecting” status.
  • macOS: stuck on “Connecting”, or a “Can’t establish connection” error.
  • iOS: the app stays on “Connecting”, or you get a “Connecting has taken too long” notification.
  • Android: “It’s taking a bit longer than usual” or “Hold on - we’re trying to connect”.
  • Android TV and Fire TV: stuck on “Connecting” with an “It’s taking longer than usual” notification.
  • Any platform: the app is stuck on “Finding server”, or it connects but never loads your IP and ISP information.
  • A yellow warning reading “You initiated too many connections or reached the device limit”. It tells you to wait 10 minutes or disconnect one of your 10 devices. This is NordVPN’s “Session Limit Reached” error, and it has its own fix in step 8 below.
  • On office, campus, hotel or airport Wi-Fi: “Timed out” or “Server unreachable” notifications, or a connection that reports success with no internet behind it. NordVPN’s article on restricted networks covers that case. Its fixes are steps 4 and 5.

Two related complaints are not connection failures. If NordVPN connects but Netflix shows a proxy error, go to Does NordVPN work with Netflix? or our Netflix VPN not working page, which covers every provider. If you have no internet at all while NordVPN is disconnected, the kill switch is usually doing what it was set to do. See step 9.

Likely causes, ranked

NordVPN does not publish failure statistics. So this ranking follows the order in which its own troubleshooting articles present the fixes. That order is the closest thing to a frequency ranking that NordVPN offers.

  1. One server, or the Quick Connect pick, is the problem. Every NordVPN “can’t connect” article starts with the same instruction. If you used the “Secure my connection” button, connect manually to several specific countries instead.
  2. The network blocks the protocol. A protocol is the method the app uses to build the VPN connection. NordLynx, NordVPN’s default, is based on WireGuard and runs over UDP. Filtered Wi-Fi often drops it. NordVPN’s answer is NordWhisper, then obfuscated servers, then OpenVPN TCP. Obfuscated servers hide the fact that you are using a VPN, and they now run on NordWhisper.
  3. Security software or a second VPN is interfering. NordVPN asks you to add the app to your antivirus exclusions and to check for other VPNs running on the computer.
  4. The app is out of date. Updating is the second step in both the Windows and the macOS article.
  5. You hit the session limit. Every plan allows 10 devices at the same time. We verified this on 31 October 2026. The error is followed by a 10-minute wait, and pressing Quick Connect again and again makes the wait longer.
  6. Post-quantum encryption is on. Post-quantum encryption is designed to resist attacks by future quantum computers. The toggle only works with NordLynx. NordVPN’s Windows, iOS and Android articles all list switching it off as a fix.
  7. Meshnet is on. The iOS and Android articles tell you to turn Meshnet off. NordWhisper also does not work with Meshnet, Dedicated IP or Onion Over VPN servers.
  8. The system’s VPN configuration is broken. macOS keeps a NordVPN configuration in System Settings, and iOS keeps a VPN profile. Both articles have you remove and recreate it. Windows, Android and TV devices get a network reset instead.
  9. The kill switch or VPN bypass prevention is blocking traffic. A kill switch blocks your internet if the VPN connection drops. These features cut internet access when NordVPN is not connected. That looks like NordVPN is “not working”, but it is doing its job.
  10. DNS is being overridden. DNS is the system that looks up the address of each site you visit. A custom DNS address in the app replaces NordVPN’s own DNS servers, 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100. NordVPN’s Fire TV article warns that a custom DNS “can cause issues when using streaming services”.
  11. The device cannot run NordVPN at all. First-generation Fire TV Sticks do not allow VPN connections. Second-generation sticks and the Basic Edition run Android versions that are too old. Vega OS sticks are missing some features for now.

Fixes in order

Check the connection after each step, as NordVPN’s articles do. On Windows, NordVPN suggests opening a browser in incognito mode and loading any page.

  1. Rule out the basics. Confirm the internet works with NordVPN disconnected. Restart the device, and try another network. On a phone, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If the problem appears on every device on one network, the network is the cause. Go to steps 4 and 5.
  2. Connect manually to several countries. Skip “Secure my connection” and pick two or three countries from the list. If one country fails and another works, you have found a server problem, not an app problem. NordVPN’s macOS article adds one more tip. If the failure started after repeated connections to the same server, wait a few minutes before you try again.
  3. Update the app. Windows: click the cogwheel in the bottom-left corner and click “Update” if a banner offers a new version. macOS: click the profile icon in the top-right corner, then “Settings”, and click “Update now” if offered. iOS, Android and TV apps update through their stores.
  4. Change the protocol. NordVPN’s protocol article offers NordLynx, OpenVPN UDP and TCP, and NordWhisper. NordLynx is the WireGuard-based default, and for speed “the answer is always NordLynx”. NordVPN calls OpenVPN “the most stable NordVPN protocol”. It recommends NordWhisper for restrictive networks. Our NordVPN data also lists IKEv2/IPsec, taken from the help center. It did not appear in the protocol-choice article we loaded. Windows: profile icon, “Settings”, “Connection”, then “Auto (Recommended)” or a specific protocol. NordWhisper’s own article describes the Windows path as the gear icon, “Connection and security”, then clicking the current protocol. macOS: profile icon, “Settings”, “General”, then try each protocol. iOS: profile icon, the settings icon in the upper right, “VPN Connection”, “Protocol”. Android: profile icon, “Settings”, “Location and protocol”. Android TV and Fire TV: scroll to the cogwheel, “Settings”, “Protocol”. On a filtered network, NordVPN’s restricted-network article gives an order. Try NordWhisper first, then obfuscated servers, then OpenVPN (TCP). NordVPN calls TCP more resilient to blocks than UDP.
  5. Try an obfuscated server. Scroll the server list to “Specialty servers” and click “Obfuscated Servers”. On Android and iOS, tap “Specialty Servers” on the home screen, then “Obfuscated”. The three dots beside the entry let you pick a country. NordVPN has moved this category from OpenVPN to NordWhisper. It says the servers “only appear when the protocol is set to Auto or NordWhisper”. So if the category is missing or grayed out, go back to step 4. The category can no longer be reached through a manual OpenVPN connection.
  6. Turn off post-quantum encryption. Windows: cogwheel, “Connection”, switch “Post-quantum encryption” off. iOS: profile icon, “Settings”, find the “VPN connection” section and switch it off. Android: profile icon, “Settings”, switch it off. The feature only works with NordLynx, so you lose nothing on other protocols.
  7. Clear interference. Add NordVPN to your antivirus exclusions list. Close or uninstall any other VPN client. On Windows, pause NordVPN’s own real-time protection if the trouble started after you turned it on. Click the shield icon on the left of the app, “Pause”, then choose a duration.
  8. Turn off Meshnet and clear the session limit. iOS: profile icon, “Meshnet”, the three dots in the upper right, “Turn off Meshnet”. Android: “Products” in the bottom bar, “Meshnet” under “Your security suite”, toggle off. In August 2025, NordVPN announced that Meshnet would shut down on 1 December 2025. It then reversed the decision. The same blog post says the feature “is not going anywhere after all”. So Meshnet is still in the apps, and still worth switching off while you troubleshoot. For the “Session Limit Reached” warning, disconnect NordVPN on devices you are not using. Wait the full 10 minutes without pressing Quick Connect, then connect once. If it persists, sign out and back in, and finally reinstall. NordVPN says each repeated attempt extends the wait.
  9. Check the kill switch and VPN bypass prevention. NordVPN’s feature page states the kill switch “is not activated by default”. On Windows, the Internet Kill Switch cuts your internet whenever you are disconnected from NordVPN servers. In NordVPN’s words, “With no VPN, you have no internet access”. The App Kill Switch closes the programs you listed. On Android 8 and later, the kill switch is system-wide and “blocks any internet access when there is no VPN connection”. Android’s own Always-on VPN toggle does the same. It is at Settings, Connections, More connection settings, VPN, the cog next to NordVPN. The macOS App Store build and the iOS app use “VPN bypass prevention”. It forces all traffic covered by the VPN configuration through the tunnel, and it stays active across app restarts and sleep. You manage it in Settings under “VPN connection”. The macOS build downloaded from NordVPN’s site has an App Kill Switch instead. If you need internet while disconnected, turn the feature off and reconnect. The trade-off is that your traffic is no longer blocked when the VPN is off. On Linux, run nordvpn set killswitch off. The kill switch is not available on the Fire TV Stick at all.
  10. Fix DNS. Remove any custom DNS you entered, or set NordVPN’s own addresses on purpose. Windows: profile icon, “Settings”, “Connection and security”, turn on custom DNS and enter 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100. macOS: “Settings”, “Custom DNS”, “Add DNS server”, then “Use Custom DNS”. iOS: profile tab, “Settings”, “Custom DNS”. NordVPN says to turn off real-time protection first. Android: profile, “Settings”, “DNS”, “Use custom DNS”. The same note about real-time protection applies. Reconnect afterwards. If sites fail while the app says connected, also turn off DNS over HTTPS or “Secure DNS” in the browser, as NordVPN’s Netflix article advises. NordVPN’s help center says it “does not support IPv6 yet”. So if our IPv6 leak test shows an address, turn off IPv6 on the device or router.
  11. Reset the network or the VPN profile. Windows: click the question mark in the lower-left corner, “Run diagnostics”, “Continue”, “Reset network”. Wait for the commands to finish, then restart. NordVPN warns this also wipes saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN or APN settings. macOS: Apple menu, “System Settings”, “VPN”, the (i) next to NordVPN, “Remove Configuration”, “Remove”. Quit NordVPN with Command + Q and reopen it. Click “Secure your connection” and allow the configuration when asked. iOS: profile icon, “Settings”, “Reset VPN Profile”. If that is not enough, go to Settings, “General”, “Transfer or Reset iPhone”, “Reset”, “Reset Network Settings”. Android: Settings, “Reset Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth” or “Reset network settings”, then restart. Android TV and Fire TV: Settings, “Network and Internet”, “Wi-Fi”, “Forget Network”, then restart and rejoin.
  12. Reinstall the app. Android: Settings, “Apps”, NordVPN, the trash icon, restart, then install from NordVPN’s website. Android TV and Fire TV: Settings, “Applications”, “Manage Installed Applications”, NordVPN, uninstall, restart, then reinstall from Google Play or the Amazon Appstore. Windows and macOS: NordVPN’s uninstall article points to the standard Microsoft and Apple removal steps. Restart, then install the latest version from nordvpn.com. Linux: sudo apt-get --purge remove 'nordvpn*', then reinstall.
  13. Check the Fire TV limits. NordVPN’s Fire TV article says first-generation Fire TV Sticks “do not allow VPN connections”. It says second-generation sticks and the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition “use Android versions that are too old”. It also says sticks running Vega OS “will be missing some features temporarily”. On supported Fire TV devices, you can choose NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN TCP or OpenVPN UDP. You can also exclude apps with split tunneling, but there is no kill switch.
  14. Contact support with specifics. NordVPN’s live chat is 24/7, and its email form promises a reply within 24 hours. Give the platform, app version, exact error text and the servers you tried. For the session limit, say how many devices are connected. On a filtered network where nothing else works, NordVPN’s last documented option is a manual IKEv2 connection. You set it up with the guide for your operating system.

If NordVPN connects but a site still thinks you are at home, run our is my VPN working check. It shows the country and address your connection presents. These should match the server you chose.

When to switch

NordVPN’s money-back guarantee covers 30 days from a first purchase made directly from NordVPN. You request it through live chat or the email form. Support sends a link, you verify your identity, and a “Refund” button appears next to eligible payments in your billing history. NordVPN says processing can take up to 4 hours, and the money can take up to 10 business days. Renewals are not covered: “Once your subscription renews, it’s no longer eligible for a refund under this policy”. Apple refunds App Store purchases, and Amazon refunds Amazon Appstore purchases. Google Play purchases are refunded by NordVPN support, or by Google within 48 hours of payment. The cancel NordVPN guide has every step.

On 31 October 2026, the 27-month Basic plan cost $3.49 a month. That is $94.23 up front, and it renews at $139.08 a year. The monthly plan is $14.99. If the real problem is a network that blocks NordVPN rather than a bug, compare what the alternatives do about it before you switch:

All three offer a 30-day refund, so you can test them inside NordVPN’s own window. Our NordVPN review and the score shown on that page weigh the whole picture, not just connectivity.

Frequently asked questions

Why is NordVPN stuck on Connecting?
Usually the server you picked, or the one Quick Connect chose, cannot be reached from your network. NordVPN's own articles tell you to connect manually to several countries first. Then update the app, change the protocol and reset the network settings, in that order.
Which NordVPN protocol should I use when it will not connect?
NordLynx is the default and the fastest. If it fails, NordVPN recommends NordWhisper for restrictive networks such as office, campus, hotel or airport Wi-Fi. After that, try obfuscated servers, then OpenVPN TCP. NordVPN describes OpenVPN TCP as harder to block than UDP.
Why is NordVPN not working on my Fire TV Stick?
NordVPN's Fire TV article says first-generation Fire TV Sticks do not allow VPN connections at all. Second-generation sticks and the Basic Edition use Android versions that are too old. New Vega OS sticks are missing some features for now. There is also no kill switch on Fire TV.
Does the NordVPN kill switch block my internet when I am disconnected?
Yes, by design. The Windows Internet Kill Switch cuts internet access whenever you are disconnected from NordVPN servers. The Android kill switch blocks all internet when there is no VPN connection. The macOS App Store and iOS apps use VPN bypass prevention. The feature is off by default. So if you have no internet while disconnected, you or someone else turned it on.
What does the Session Limit Reached error mean?
You either reached the 10-device limit or made too many connection attempts in a short time. NordVPN asks you to disconnect on a device you are not using. Wait the full 10 minutes without pressing Quick Connect, then try once. Repeated attempts extend the wait.
Can I get a refund if NordVPN never connects?
Yes, within 30 days of a first purchase made directly from NordVPN. Ask in live chat, open the link support sends, and press the Refund button next to the payment. Renewals are not covered. App Store purchases go to Apple, and Amazon Appstore purchases go to Amazon.
