NordVPN does not promise that Netflix works. Its streaming page makes no claim for any single service. It warns that services such as Netflix “may limit VPN connections”. The only Netflix mention on an official NordVPN page is in its SmartDNS help article. That article lists “Netflix Originals” among the services its smart DNS supports. It names them next to Amazon Prime, Disney Plus and MAX for the US region, Paramount+ and Peacock TV.

NordVPN’s help center also publishes a troubleshooting article titled “Netflix doesn’t work with NordVPN”. That title tells you two things at once. People use NordVPN for Netflix, and it does not always work.

This guide turns NordVPN’s own instructions and Netflix’s help page into a setup order and a fix order. We have not tested streaming on NordVPN. So every “works” on this page is NordVPN’s documented claim as of 31 October 2026.

Does NordVPN work with Netflix? What its own pages say

NordVPN’s apps include a feature called SmartPlay. Its help center says SmartPlay is “automatically enabled in all NordVPN apps, so there is nothing to set up, update, or activate”. SmartPlay combines a DNS switch with the normal encrypted VPN connection. DNS is the system your device uses to look up website addresses. With SmartPlay, connecting to any server is the whole setup.

SmartDNS is the same DNS switch for devices that cannot run an app. It is the only place NordVPN names Netflix at all. “Netflix Originals” is a narrow claim. Originals are titles Netflix owns and shows everywhere. So the claim says nothing about whether a licensed title in another country’s library will load. NordVPN’s SmartDNS article also warns that SmartDNS “may not work with all of the streaming services you can access while connected to NordVPN.”

For Netflix, the numbers that matter are the network and the device allowance. We verified both on 31 October 2026. NordVPN has 7,242 servers in 150 countries and 225 locations. Every plan allows 10 simultaneous connections. A large pool matters because Netflix blocks individual IP addresses, as NordVPN’s own blog explains. A provider with many addresses per country has more to rotate through.

On the same date, the 27-month Basic plan cost $3.49 a month, or $94.23 in total. It renews at $139.08 a year. A single month cost $14.99. The first direct purchase comes with a 30-day refund. The full table is on the NordVPN pricing page, and the verdict is in our NordVPN review.

Step by step: using NordVPN with Netflix

  1. Subscribe and install the app on the device you watch on. NordVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. It also has Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions. For Netflix, use the full app rather than a browser extension where you can. The extension protects only the browser.
  2. Choose a server in the region you want. Open the app, scroll to the country list and pick the country whose library you want to watch. Our Netflix region guide explains how Netflix decides your region. If you only want your local library protected, press Quick Connect for the nearest server. Use a standard server. SmartPlay runs in the background on every connection. NordVPN’s Netflix article assumes a plain connection in the country whose titles you expect to see.
  3. Confirm you are actually connected. NordVPN’s article tells you to look for the “Connected to NordVPN” message. It also says to run a DNS leak test before blaming Netflix. A DNS leak test checks that your device looks up websites through the VPN, not through your internet provider. Our is my VPN working check shows the country your connection appears to come from. It should match the server you chose.
  4. Leave the app’s DNS settings alone. NordVPN’s TV app guides say a custom DNS server in the app overrides NordVPN’s own resolvers. They say it “can cause issues when using streaming services.” Keep the protocol on NordLynx, the default, unless something else is broken. Split tunneling lets you choose which apps skip the VPN. If you use it on Windows, Android or Android TV, make sure the Netflix app or your browser is not excluded from the VPN.
  5. Clear Netflix’s memory of your old region. Netflix remembers the region for each app and each profile. After switching countries, close the Netflix app or browser fully before you reopen it. On Android, NordVPN’s article gives the exact route: Settings, Apps, Netflix, Force Stop, Storage, Clear cache. On iOS, it says to reinstall the app instead. In a browser, clear cookies for netflix.com.
  6. Install the TV app if your TV can run one, and sign in by QR code. Android TV: install NordVPN from Google Play, or install the APK from NordVPN’s site. The APK is the app’s installation file. Open the app, choose Log in, and scan the QR code or enter the code on your phone. Fire TV: install from the Amazon Appstore and accept the Fire OS VPN warning. NordVPN says first-generation Fire TV Sticks cannot run a VPN at all. Second-generation and Basic Edition sticks run Android versions that are too old. The new Vega OS sticks are temporarily missing some features. Apple TV: install the native NordVPN app, which NordVPN’s smart TV guide links from its download page, and sign in. Then connect to the country you want from the app’s list.
  7. Use SmartDNS on a TV without an app. Older Samsung and LG sets, Roku and consoles cannot run NordVPN. For LG and Apple TV, NordVPN documents SmartDNS. First, disconnect from any VPN. Log in to your Nord Account on a device on the same network as the TV. Open NordVPN and activate SmartDNS. This adds your home IPv4 address to an allowlist, so SmartDNS accepts requests from your network. It can take up to 10 minutes to show as active. IPv4 and IPv6 are the older and newer types of internet address. NordVPN says to allowlist IPv4, not IPv6, because it does not support IPv6 yet. Then set the TV’s DNS to manual. Enter NordVPN’s two SmartDNS addresses, 103.86.96.103 and 103.86.99.103, in the order your Nord Account shows them. On Apple TV, the path is General, Network, Wi-Fi, your network, Configure DNS, Manual. SmartDNS carries no encryption and does not change your IP address. So it is a streaming tool, not a privacy one. For Samsung TVs, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox and PlayStation, NordVPN’s only documented routes are a router running NordVPN or sharing a VPN connection from a Windows PC.
Copyright notice. We do not condone downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission. P2P and media players have many legal uses. Follow the law in your country and the terms of the services you use.

NordVPN’s help pages add a condition to every one of these steps. They say the service “should never be used to bypass copyright regulations”. You are responsible for complying with the terms of the services you access. Netflix’s help page treats a VPN as the cause of its error and tells you to turn it off. Read both before you decide what you are using the connection for.

Expected result

Once the app is connected to a server in your chosen country, open the Netflix app fresh. Netflix should load without the “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” message and play titles. It should show the library and Top 10 list of the country you connected to.

You can check this with Netflix’s own tool. Open fast.com on a device on the same network and click “Show more info”. Then read the country next to “Client”. Netflix’s help page uses that field to detect a VPN. With NordVPN on, it should name the server’s country.

NordVPN’s article notes one exception to expect rather than fight. If you are physically in the European Union, it says Netflix “will provide duplicate content as if you were in your home country, but only for a limited time”. So a region change may not appear right away.

On a SmartDNS TV, expect the services NordVPN lists for SmartDNS and nothing more. The documented claim is Netflix Originals, not whole libraries.

Troubleshooting: NordVPN Netflix not working

  • “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”, error M7111-5059. Netflix’s help page now also lists code E106. The error means the server’s address is on Netflix’s blocklist. NordVPN’s fix order: close the browser or Netflix app, connect to a different server in the same country, then reopen. Netflix blocks addresses, not accounts, so switching servers is the whole remedy. Keep trying servers in the same country before you change countries. Clear the app cache between attempts, as in step 5.
  • The error appears on every server. Check two Netflix rules first. Netflix’s help page says VPNs “aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience”. So an ad-supported plan will show the error whatever server you choose, and so will a live event. If your plan is ad-free, run the DNS leak test again. NordVPN’s blog lists DNS location mismatches and IPv6 leaks as triggers, and NordVPN does not support IPv6. If our IPv6 leak test shows an address, disable IPv6 on the device or router and reconnect.
  • The library did not change, or the Top 10 is still your home country’s. Netflix remembers the region on the profile, not just the device. NordVPN’s article says to connect to the server you want and create a new Netflix profile to force a region update. It warns that switching regions often on one profile can lock the visible region. If you are in the EU, see the note under Expected result. That is Netflix behaving as designed.
  • Something on the device is interfering. NordVPN’s article lists the usual causes. Turn off DNS over HTTPS, or “Secure DNS”, in the browser. Turn off third-party web-protection tools. Pause NordVPN’s own Next-gen antivirus real-time protection from the shield icon. In the mobile apps and extensions, turn off protection instead. A custom DNS entered in the app’s settings is the other common cause. Remove it.
  • SmartDNS stopped working on the TV. Your home IP address probably changed, which breaks the allowlist. Disconnect the VPN on a device on the TV’s network. Log in to your Nord Account from that device and activate SmartDNS again. If a service never worked on SmartDNS, check NordVPN’s supported list. It is short and mostly US-only.
  • Everything looks right and Netflix still fails. Check whether Netflix itself is down. NordVPN’s article links its “Is Netflix down?” page. Then contact NordVPN’s 24/7 live chat with the error code, the server name and the device. Support can tell you whether a location is blocked right now. Nobody outside NordVPN can tell you that.
  • When to give up and get a refund. The money-back guarantee covers 30 days from a first purchase made directly from NordVPN. Ask in live chat, open the link support sends, and press the Refund button next to the eligible payment. NordVPN says processing can take up to 4 hours. The money can take up to 10 business days to arrive. For purchases through Apple’s App Store, ask Apple. For Amazon Appstore purchases, ask Amazon. For Google Play purchases, ask NordVPN support, or Google within 48 hours. Renewals are not refundable, so test Netflix inside the first month. Frequently asked questions

Does NordVPN officially support Netflix?
Only in a narrow way. NordVPN's VPN pages make no claim for any single service. They say services like Netflix may limit VPN connections. Its SmartDNS help article lists Netflix Originals among the services its smart DNS supports. Its help center also publishes a troubleshooting article called 'Netflix doesn't work with NordVPN'.
Which NordVPN server should I use for Netflix?
Use a standard server in the country whose library you want, chosen in the app's country list. NordVPN's own guidance frames this as reaching your home library while traveling. If Netflix shows the proxy error, close the app and switch to another server in the same country. NordVPN's troubleshooting article recommends that before anything else.
Why does Netflix show the proxy error with NordVPN on?
Netflix blocks IP addresses it links to VPNs and proxies. It blocks addresses, not accounts, so the server you are on has been listed. NordVPN's blog also names DNS location mismatches and frequent IP switching as triggers. Netflix adds that VPNs are not supported at all on its ad-supported plan or for live events.
Can I use NordVPN with Netflix on a smart TV?
Yes. NordVPN has native apps for Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. The app does not run on first- or second-generation Fire TV Sticks. TVs that cannot run an app can use SmartDNS after you allowlist your home IPv4 address in your Nord Account. Samsung TVs, Roku and consoles need a router or a shared connection from a Windows PC.
What does NordVPN cost and can I get a refund if Netflix does not work?
On 31 October 2026, the 27-month Basic plan cost $3.49 a month, or $94.23 in total. It renews at $139.08 a year. The monthly plan is $14.99. Direct first purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, which you request through live chat. Apple refunds App Store purchases under its own rules.
Has VPN Clue tested NordVPN with Netflix?
Not yet. Every statement on this page about what works comes from NordVPN's official pages or Netflix's help center, dated 31 October 2026. When our lab runs Netflix checks, this guide will show measured results instead of claims.
