ExpressVPN says yes, and it documents Netflix more fully than any provider we track. Its support guide “How to stream content with ExpressVPN” lists Netflix among the services you can “securely access”. Its Netflix page says the service is “optimized to work with Netflix”. Its support center also has an article titled “Troubleshooting steps for streaming Netflix”, with a server order to try.

In our record, ExpressVPN claims twelve streaming services: Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, HBO Max, YouTube TV, DAZN, Paramount+, ESPN+, Crunchyroll and Peacock. All twelve carry the status “claimed”, because we have not tested streaming on ExpressVPN. This page turns ExpressVPN’s own instructions and Netflix’s help page into a setup order and a fix order, dated 31 October 2026.

Does ExpressVPN work with Netflix? What its own pages say

ExpressVPN’s Netflix page is direct about the limits. Its FAQ says Netflix still allows VPNs “to an extent”. It says there is “a limited Netflix VPN ban, which disallows VPN use for ad-supported plans and live events”. On a higher-tier plan, if Netflix detects the VPN, “it will only show you content that it has global rights for”. That means Netflix Originals.

The same page says Netflix “works best when you connect through the server location geographically closest to you”. ExpressVPN’s support guide frames every instruction as connecting to a location that matches your home country. It also notes that you are responsible for complying with Netflix’s terms.

We verified the facts behind the claim on 31 October 2026:

  • Servers in 113 countries and 214 locations. ExpressVPN publishes no server count.
  • Every server runs in RAM.
  • Every server uses automatic obfuscation. Obfuscation makes VPN traffic harder to spot, so hotel and campus networks do not block the connection before Netflix sees it.
  • The Lightway protocol is the default. A protocol is the method the app uses to build the encrypted connection.

The device allowance is 10 on Basic, 12 on Advanced and 14 on Express Pro. That day, the 28-month Basic plan cost $2.99 a month, or $83.72 in total. It renews at $99.95 a year. Monthly and 12-month prices are shown only at checkout. The plan table and price history are on the ExpressVPN pricing page. The verdict is in our ExpressVPN review.

Step by step: using ExpressVPN with Netflix

  1. Subscribe and install the app on the device you watch on. ExpressVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Fire TV and Android TV. It also has Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions. ExpressVPN’s guide says manual VPN configurations “are not optimized for streaming”. Use the app instead, or MediaStreamer on devices that cannot run one.
  2. Add the browser extension on a computer, and watch in the browser. ExpressVPN’s streaming guide says that on Windows and Mac “streaming services generally work best through a web browser”. Its setup steps for both platforms install the app and the browser extension together. The extension has a “Spoof your location” feature, which is on by default. It replaces the location your browser would report to websites with the VPN server’s location. ExpressVPN’s content-access article says that without it, a site can read your approximate position through the browser, even while the VPN is on.
  3. Choose a server in the region you want. In the app, open Selected Location and pick a country. On mobile, tap Change instead. ExpressVPN’s guide says to choose the location that matches your home country. When a country has several cities, choose the one closest to you physically. US users who hit problems get a specific order from the Netflix troubleshooting article: Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, New Jersey 3, Los Angeles 3, then Denver.
  4. Verify the connection before opening Netflix. ExpressVPN’s steps end with “check your IP address and run a DNS leak test”. A DNS leak test checks that your device looks up websites through the VPN, not through your internet provider. Our is my VPN working check does both. It should show the server’s country.
  5. Force-close the Netflix app whenever you change location. ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting article says you must close and reopen the Netflix app after every server change. It gives the route for each device. On iOS and Android, swipe the app away. On Android TV, go to Settings, Apps, Netflix, Force Stop. On Fire TV, go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, Netflix, Force Stop. On Apple TV, double-click the TV button, then swipe up. In a browser, clear cookies and cache or use a private window, as the Netflix page recommends.
  6. Install the native app on Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV or Chromecast with Google TV. Apple TV needs tvOS 17 or later. Install ExpressVPN from the App Store. Sign in with the QR code, which ExpressVPN recommends, or with your email, or by restoring an App Store purchase. Select Allow to add the VPN configuration, and choose whether to block ads and trackers. Then press the power button, or pick a location from Recommended, Favorites, Search or All locations. Fire TV and Fire TV Stick need Fire OS 6 or later, or Vega OS. Search the Appstore for ExpressVPN, then download, open and install it. If the Appstore is unavailable, ExpressVPN documents sideloading the APK on Fire OS. Sideloading means installing the app file yourself instead of getting it from the store. Android TV needs Android 7.0 or later from Google Play, with the same sideload fallback. Open Netflix only after the app says Protected.
  7. Use MediaStreamer or a router on a Samsung or LG TV, Roku, PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch. MediaStreamer is ExpressVPN’s smart DNS. It is not a VPN. It encrypts nothing, has no interface and cannot change location. Setup has three parts. First, log in to the ExpressVPN+ portal, open DNS Settings and click Register my IP address. Turn on automatic registration so a changed home IP is tracked. Second, open the Setup page and choose Network & smart home, MediaStreamer. Copy the two addresses shown as MediaStreamer IP #1 and #2. Third, enter them as manual DNS on the device and restart it. ExpressVPN says the restart is required for the change to take effect. On Apple TV without tvOS 17, the path is Settings, Network, your connection, Configure DNS, Manual. ExpressVPN removes a registered address after 30 days without a sign-in or app use on that network. A dynamic home IP is one your internet provider changes from time to time, and its next owner can re-register it. So keep the app open on a device on the same network now and then. The alternative is ExpressVPN’s router app. It requires a compatible Asus, Linksys or Netgear router, or ExpressVPN’s own Aircove router with the VPN built in.
Copyright notice. We do not condone downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission. P2P and media players have many legal uses. Follow the law in your country and the terms of the services you use.

ExpressVPN’s support pages attach the same note to every one of these steps. They say the service “must not be used for copyright infringement”. That includes streaming “in violation of copyright laws” or “to circumvent geographic restrictions imposed by content providers”. You are responsible for complying with Netflix’s terms. Netflix’s help page treats a VPN as the cause of its error and tells you to turn it off. Read both before you decide what you are using the connection for.

Expected result

The ExpressVPN app should show Protected on a server in your chosen location. Force-close and reopen the Netflix app, or clear the browser’s cookies. Netflix should then play without the “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” message. It should show the library of the country you connected to.

You can check this with Netflix’s own tool. Open fast.com on a device on the same network and click “Show more info”. Then read the country next to “Client”. Netflix’s help page uses that field to decide whether a VPN is on, so it should name the server’s country.

On MediaStreamer, expect the services ExpressVPN documents to work from the registered network. You get no choice of region, because MediaStreamer cannot change locations. If you need another country’s library, you need the app or a router. On an ad-supported Netflix plan, expect failure by design. The troubleshooting section below explains why.

Troubleshooting: ExpressVPN Netflix not working

  • “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”, error M7111-5059. Netflix’s help page now also lists code E106. The error means the server’s address is on Netflix’s blocklist. ExpressVPN gives a fix order. First, change to a different server location. US users should try Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, New Jersey 3, Los Angeles 3 and Denver, in that order. Force-close the Netflix app after each change. Second, sign out of the Netflix app, restart the device and sign in again. Third, try the Netflix website in a browser with the ExpressVPN extension installed, or try a different browser. For the browser, its Netflix page says to clear cookies and cache, use an incognito window or switch browsers before you switch servers.
  • The error appears on every server. Check Netflix’s rules first. Its help page says VPNs “aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience”. ExpressVPN’s own FAQ repeats that the ban covers ad-supported plans and live events. No server change fixes that. If your plan is ad-free, run the leak tests again, including our IPv6 leak test. IPv6 is the newer type of internet address. ExpressVPN’s Network Lock blocks IPv6 outside the tunnel. So a visible IPv6 address suggests the app is not connected properly, or Network Lock is off.
  • The library did not change. Netflix remembers the region for each app and profile. Force-close the app as in step 5, or clear the browser’s cookies. Then reconnect and reopen Netflix. On a phone, ExpressVPN’s content-access article says some apps check the device’s location services rather than the IP address. Turn Location Services off and reconnect. On iOS, go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services. On Android, go to Settings, Location.
  • Pages fail to load or stay blank. ExpressVPN’s content-access article says Advanced Protection can block scripts a site needs. Advanced Protection is its ad and tracker blocker. Turn it off in the app’s settings and retry. To keep the blocker on elsewhere, use split tunneling to exclude the browser or the Netflix app. Split tunneling lets you choose which apps skip the VPN.
  • MediaStreamer stopped working on the TV. Your home IP address probably changed. Sign in to the ExpressVPN website, or open the app on a device on the TV’s network. Automatic registration then picks up the new address. You can also register it again manually. ExpressVPN also says to check that any DDNS client you set up is still tracking updates. A DDNS client keeps a fixed name pointed at your home IP address when that address changes. If MediaStreamer never worked, confirm that you entered the two addresses exactly and restarted the device.
  • You are on a manual OpenVPN or router configuration. ExpressVPN says manual configurations are not optimized for streaming. Switch to the app, or to MediaStreamer on devices without an app.
  • When to contact support. If a country fails on every server after the steps above, ExpressVPN’s own article says to contact its 24/7 support. Use the chat box on its site. Support can tell you whether a location is blocked right now. Nobody outside ExpressVPN can tell you that. Give them the error code, the server name and the device.
  • When to ask for a refund. First-time users have 30 days from purchase to request a full refund through live chat. The guarantee also covers a dedicated IP add-on bought with the plan. It excludes anyone who has been refunded before. ExpressVPN notes that eligibility follows the terms shown at checkout for your plan or promotion. Subscriptions billed through Apple’s App Store or Google Play are refunded by Apple or Google at their discretion, not by ExpressVPN. Test Netflix inside the first month, on the device you actually watch on. Renewals are outside the guarantee. If you leave, our cancel ExpressVPN guide covers the steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does ExpressVPN officially claim to work with Netflix?
Yes. Its support guide 'How to stream content with ExpressVPN' lists Netflix among the services you can securely access. Its Netflix page says the service is 'optimized to work with Netflix'. In our record, ExpressVPN documents twelve streaming services, the most of any provider we track. We have not tested any of them.
Which ExpressVPN server should I use for Netflix?
ExpressVPN's support guide says to connect to a server location that matches the country you are in. If there are several cities, choose the closest one. Its Netflix troubleshooting article gives US users an order to try: Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, New Jersey 3, Los Angeles 3, then Denver. Force-close the Netflix app after each change.
Does ExpressVPN work with Netflix on Apple TV, Fire TV and smart TVs?
ExpressVPN has native apps for Apple TV, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV. Apple TV needs tvOS 17 or later. Fire TV needs Fire OS 6 or later, or Vega OS. For Samsung and LG TVs, Roku, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, it documents MediaStreamer. MediaStreamer is a smart DNS service. It needs your home IP address registered, and it cannot change location.
Why does Netflix show the proxy error with ExpressVPN on?
Netflix blocks IP addresses it links to VPNs. ExpressVPN's advice is to clear cookies and cache or use a private window, switch servers, and try a browser with its extension. Netflix itself says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported plan or for live events. No server change fixes that.
What does ExpressVPN cost, and can I get a refund if Netflix fails?
On 31 October 2026, the only term on the order page was 28 months. Basic cost $2.99 a month, or $83.72 in total, and renews at $99.95 a year. Monthly and 12-month prices appear only at checkout. First-time users get a 30-day money-back guarantee through live chat. Apple and Google refund App Store and Google Play purchases instead.
