How to Cancel ExpressVPN and Get a Refund (Step by Step)
How to cancel ExpressVPN: turn off auto-renewal on its website, ask for the 30-day refund by live chat, and cancel App Store or Google Play billing.
By VPN Clue Editorial Team Published Last verified
Canceling ExpressVPN takes two separate actions. Turning off automatic renewal stops the next charge. Asking for a refund returns your money if you are inside the 30-day guarantee. You may need one or both.
Every step below comes from ExpressVPN’s own support pages, which we loaded on 31 October 2026. The prices come from our ExpressVPN record, verified the same day. ExpressVPN says “You cannot cancel your subscription within the ExpressVPN app”. You cancel on its website or in the app store that billed you.
Before you start: renewal or refund?
If you want your money back, go to the refund section. That applies if you bought ExpressVPN less than 30 days ago, directly from expressvpn.com, for the first time. A refund ends the subscription.
If you are past 30 days, or you had an ExpressVPN refund before, turn off automatic renewal and let it lapse. Do the same if you want to keep using the service until the end of the term you paid for.
If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, ExpressVPN cannot touch the billing. The app-store section applies, and the 30-day guarantee does not.
The renewal prices show why this setting matters. On 31 October 2026, the 28-month plans cost:
- Basic: $2.99 a month, or $83.72 billed up front. It renews at $99.95 a year.
- Advanced: $125.72. It renews at $119.95 a year.
- Express Pro: $209.72. It renews at $199.95 a year.
ExpressVPN’s subscriptions page confirms how renewal works:
- The 2-year offer “renews yearly at the end of the initial 2-year period”.
- Introductory discounts apply only to the first period.
- Checkout shows the first price and the renewal price “just above the subscribe button”.
- The renewal rate “is subject to change with advance notice to you”.
Every tier also has monthly and 12-month plans. Their prices appear only at checkout. Subscriptions bought with Bitcoin through BitPay, or with Paymentwall, never renewed automatically. ExpressVPN “no longer supports cryptocurrencies” for new payments.
Step by step: turn off auto-renewal on the My subscription page
- Open portal.expressvpn.com/my-subscription in any browser. Log in with the email address you used to buy ExpressVPN.
- Click Cancel subscription under Automatic renewal, then follow the prompts.
- Check that Automatic renewal now shows OFF. ExpressVPN’s renewal article says the same page shows your renewal date. You can reverse the decision there with Turn on auto-renewal for VPN and any add-ons.
Start before midnight on the renewal date. ExpressVPN’s subscriptions page sets that deadline whether the plan renews monthly, yearly or at the end of the 2-year offer.
If there is no Cancel subscription option, ExpressVPN says a recent renewal payment may have failed. To stop further attempts, remove your saved payment method. Removing it also turns off automatic renewal.
Expected result
The My subscription page shows Automatic renewal as OFF. You are not billed for another cycle. The apps keep working until the last day of the period you paid for.
After that, ExpressVPN says the service is suspended until you make a manual renewal payment. You make it from the same page: click Add Subscription, then choose a plan and a payment method. If you use ExpressKeys, you can still view the logins stored there after the subscription ends. You cannot add new entries. This step does not refund anything.
Step by step: request a refund within 30 days
- Check when and where you bought. In your account, open Account & Billing, then View Payments under Payment history. You can download invoices there. The guarantee covers 30 days “from the moment you buy your subscription”. It covers first-time users only, and direct purchases only.
- Open live chat on expressvpn.com and say you want a refund under the 30-day money-back guarantee. Our record shows ExpressVPN’s support is available 24/7. ExpressVPN’s page says the support team “checks eligibility and walks you through the next steps”. Eligibility follows the terms in effect when you bought. Those terms can differ by plan, purchase method or promotion. Promotional terms appear at checkout.
- Keep the chat transcript. The refund goes back to the original payment method. ExpressVPN’s guarantee page does not say how long a refund takes, so ask the agent and note the date.
- Include a dedicated IP add-on if you bought one in the same 30 days. The same guarantee covers it. Once the refund is issued, the subscription ends.
ExpressVPN says “Users who have previously received a refund are ineligible”. Google Play and App Store subscriptions are refunded “solely at the discretion of” Google Play Support or Apple Support.
For an unexpected charge, ExpressVPN considers a refund request only when auto-renewal is already off. The charge must also still be unrecognized after you review your invoices.
App Store and Google Play subscriptions
Cancel in the store that billed you:
- iPhone or iPad: open the App Store and tap your profile icon at the top right. Tap Subscriptions, tap ExpressVPN, tap Cancel Subscription and follow the prompts.
- Android: open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Tap ExpressVPN, tap Cancel Subscription and follow the prompts.
ExpressVPN advises canceling at least 24 hours before a free trial ends or before the next billing date. That way you avoid a charge. In both stores, access continues until the last day of the current cycle. You request refunds from Apple or Google, not ExpressVPN, and Apple or Google decides.
To come back later, ExpressVPN’s renewal article gives these paths:
- App Store: Subscriptions, ExpressVPN, Renew. If the subscription ended, tap Subscribe instead.
- Google Play: Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, Resubscribe.
Troubleshooting
- No Cancel subscription button. A renewal payment may have failed recently. If so, remove the saved payment method to stop further attempts. Otherwise, you may be logged into a different ExpressVPN account. ExpressVPN’s unexpected-charges page says to sign in with each email address you might have used.
- Charged after you thought you canceled. ExpressVPN lists three causes. One is a temporary $1 pre-authorization hold after you add a card. It is released within a few business days. Another is automatic renewal that was still ON. Confirm the setting on the My subscription page and check Payment history. The last is another ExpressVPN account under a different email. Compare the charge date with your Payment history before you contact support.
- Refund refused. Confirm the purchase was direct, your first, and within 30 days. Confirm also that you never had an ExpressVPN refund before. ExpressVPN never refunds app-store purchases. If you meet every condition and support still says no, ask for the reason in writing. Keep the transcript.
- Still connected after canceling. That is expected until the paid period ends. To stop using the service now, log out of the apps and uninstall them.
- Want to come back. For a website subscription, use Turn on auto-renewal for VPN and any add-ons while the term is still running. After it expires, use Add Subscription. ExpressVPN’s renewal article also offers View better deals for switching plans.
- Paid with crypto. Those subscriptions never renewed. To continue, use the same My subscription steps with a different payment method.
If you are switching
Most people leave ExpressVPN over the renewal price or a missing feature. Our ExpressVPN review lists the gaps. These comparisons show what you gain and lose:
- ExpressVPN vs NordVPN: a published $14.99 monthly plan, NordWhisper and obfuscated servers, and Double VPN, which ExpressVPN lacks.
- ExpressVPN vs Surfshark: $2.49 a month on the 24-month plan, and unlimited devices against ExpressVPN’s 10 on Basic.
- ExpressVPN vs Proton VPN: open-source apps and a free tier.
- CyberGhost vs ExpressVPN: a 45-day refund window on long plans.
Every one of these alternatives gives you at least 30 days to test. So you can try one before your ExpressVPN term runs out. We verified the prices quoted here on 31 October 2026. They renew at the amounts shown on each provider’s pricing page.
