How to Cancel Surfshark and Get a Refund (Step by Step)

How to cancel Surfshark: turn off auto-renewal in your account's Payments tab, ask for the 30-day refund by live chat, and handle app-store billing.

Canceling Surfshark means two separate actions, and people confuse them. Turning off auto-renewal stops the next charge. Requesting a refund gets your money back within the 30-day guarantee. You may want one, the other or both.

Every step below comes from Surfshark’s own support articles and its cancellation blog post, which we loaded on 31 October 2026. The prices come from our Surfshark record, verified the same day. Surfshark itself says canceling auto-renewal “does not automatically refund you”.

Before you start: renewal or refund?

If you want your money back, go to the refund section. That applies if you bought Surfshark less than 30 days ago, for the first time. The purchase must have been on surfshark.com or through Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge. A refund ends the subscription.

If you are past 30 days or have already renewed, turn off auto-renewal and let it lapse. Do the same if you want to keep using the service until the end of the term you paid for.

If you bought through the Apple App Store or Amazon, Surfshark cannot change the billing. The store handles the refund, and the app-store section applies.

The renewal terms are why this switch matters, and Surfshark says less about them than most providers. On 31 October 2026, the Starter 24-month plan cost $2.49 a month. That came to $67.23 for the first 27 months, under a Black Friday deal with three extra months. One cost the same, and One+ cost $107.73.

The pricing page does not state the renewal amount anywhere. It says only “Upon renewal, you will be charged the applicable renewal price”. Surfshark’s FAQ says the 2-year plan is billed once and then annually. Surfshark’s official plans post gives the 12-month and monthly prices. The 12-month Starter plan was $3.39 a month, or $40.68 in total. The monthly plan was $16.45. The post says its prices are accurate as of 30 July 2026.

Because the renewal figure is unpublished, check the Payments tab of your account before you decide. It shows the amount and date of the next charge. Surfshark’s 7-day free trial on 12- and 24-month plans converts to a paid plan. So the same Cancel renewal switch is how you stop a trial from charging you.

Step by step: turn off auto-renewal in your Surfshark account

  1. Log in to your Surfshark account at surfshark.com with the email address you used to buy.
  2. Click your email address in the top-right corner and select Subscription.
  3. Select the Payments tab.
  4. Click Cancel renewal under Subscription details.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.

You can also cancel through live chat, as Surfshark’s blog describes. Open the chat and tell Sharkbot you want to cancel. You receive a unique cancellation link. Then answer the follow-up questions about why you are leaving.

If you change your mind, the same Payments tab offers Turn on Auto-renewal, then Confirm.

Expected result

The Subscription page shows your expiration date instead of a renewal date. Surfshark says you may receive a confirmation email. No further payments are charged, and the apps keep working until the end of the period you paid for.

Surfshark’s cancellation article is explicit on two points. It says “the subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period”. It also says refunds are not given for the unused part of an active period. This step does not refund anything.

Step by step: request a refund within 30 days

  1. Check on the Payments tab when and where you bought. The guarantee is “a full refund within 30 days of your first purchase”. It applies to website, Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge purchases. They must not have been refunded before or include non-refundable services.
  2. Open live chat on surfshark.com and ask for a refund under the money-back guarantee. Our record shows the chat is open 24/7. Surfshark’s policy says the support team “will guide you through the process”. You do not need to cancel auto-renewal first, because the refund ends the subscription.
  3. Keep the chat transcript. Surfshark says approved refunds are “typically processed within a few business days”, depending on your payment method and bank. Our Surfshark record adds more from its pricing and refund notes. Cryptocurrency refunds are paid in the same cryptocurrency. Prepaid and gift-card payments are non-refundable.
  4. Check your add-ons separately. Dedicated IP and Alternative ID are non-refundable. A subscription that has already renewed is also outside the guarantee. The full terms are in section 4 of Surfshark’s Terms of Service.

App Store and Google Play subscriptions

If you bought through a store, cancel in that store. Surfshark warns that changes made there do not show in your Surfshark account. The routes are:

  • iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose Surfshark and tap Cancel Subscription.
  • Mac App Store: open the App Store and click your name. Then go to Account Settings, Subscriptions, Manage, Edit next to Surfshark, Cancel Subscription.
  • Google Play on Android: open Google Play, then your account, the subscriptions tab, Surfshark, Cancel subscription.
  • Google Play on a computer: go to play.google.com, then your account, Payments & subscriptions, the subscriptions tab, Manage next to Surfshark, Cancel subscription. Choose a reason, then Continue.
  • Amazon: go to Account & Lists, Memberships & Subscriptions, find Surfshark, Cancel Subscription. Surfshark’s blog notes the Amazon route does not always work on mobile. It recommends a desktop browser.

Apple handles App Store refunds, and Amazon handles Amazon refunds. Google Play refunds go through Google within 48 hours of payment, or through Surfshark support after that. In every store, access continues until the subscription expires.

Troubleshooting

  • No Cancel renewal option. Surfshark says the subscription was probably bought through an app store, or through a payment provider that does not support recurring payments. You must then manage it where you bought it. If you bought on the website and still cannot see the option, contact customer success through live chat. Ask them to cancel for you.
  • Canceled, but still charged. Compare the charge date with the Payments tab and the confirmation email. A charge dated before you canceled is a renewal that went through. Surfshark’s policy excludes it from the guarantee. If the charge is dated after, take it to live chat with both dates.
  • Refund refused. Confirm the purchase was your first, within 30 days and through an authorized billing partner. Confirm also that the account was never refunded before. The policy excludes add-ons, prepaid payments and renewed subscriptions. If you meet every condition, ask for the refusal in writing.
  • Trial about to end. The 7-day trial converts to a paid plan. Use Cancel renewal before it ends. If you started the trial on a phone, cancel in the store.
  • Still connected after canceling. That is expected until the expiration date. To stop now, log out of the apps and uninstall them.
  • Changed your mind. Before the expiration date, go to the Payments tab and click Turn on Auto-renewal, then Confirm.

If you are switching

People usually leave Surfshark over an unpublished renewal price, a missing feature or a streaming service that stopped working. Missing features include port forwarding and, since February 2026, SmartDNS. Our Surfshark review sets out the gaps. These comparisons show what you gain and lose:

Each offers at least 30 days to test, so you can try one before your Surfshark term runs out. We verified the prices quoted here on 31 October 2026. They renew at the amounts shown on each provider’s pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How long is Surfshark's money-back guarantee?
30 days from your first purchase. It covers subscriptions bought on surfshark.com or through Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge. It excludes a subscription that has already renewed and an account that was refunded before. App Store purchases are excluded too. So are non-refundable add-ons such as Dedicated IP and Alternative ID.
Does canceling auto-renewal refund me?
No. Surfshark's article says canceling auto-renewal stops future payments. The subscription stays active until the end of the current period. Refunds are not given for the unused part of an active period. A refund inside the 30-day window is a separate request through live chat.
What does Surfshark renew at?
Surfshark does not publish the number. Its pricing page says that upon renewal you will be charged the applicable renewal price. It also says the 24-month plan is billed once and then annually. On 31 October 2026, the Starter 24-month plan cost $67.23 for the first 27 months.
Where is the Cancel renewal button in my Surfshark account?
Log in and click your email address in the top-right corner. Select Subscription, open the Payments tab, and click Cancel renewal under Subscription details. If the option is missing, the subscription was probably bought through an app store. It may also have been bought through a payment provider that does not support recurring payments.
I bought Surfshark through the App Store or Amazon. How do I cancel?
Cancel through the store that billed you, because changes made there do not show in your Surfshark account. On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name and tap Subscriptions. Choose Surfshark and tap Cancel Subscription. On Amazon, use Memberships and Subscriptions under Account and Lists. You request refunds for those purchases from Apple or Amazon.
