Yes, NordVPN has a free trial, but not everyone can get it. New customers in 15 countries can try a 1-year or 2-year Prime plan free for 7 days. You need a credit card or PayPal, and the plan starts on its own unless you cancel in time.

There are two other ways to try NordVPN before you commit. First-time Android users can take a 3-day trial through Google Play. First-time customers also get a 30-day money-back guarantee, with some exceptions for app stores.

We checked NordVPN’s trial page, pricing page, help center and refund policy on 2 November 2026, along with Google Play’s help on cancelling. The trial rules below come from those pages. Our NordVPN review covers the service itself.

Who qualifies for the NordVPN free trial

You must meet all four conditions. NordVPN’s help center and its trial page set them out.

  • You are new to NordVPN. The trial is only for people who have never had a NordVPN subscription. The help center says it is available “only once to first-time customers with a new Nord Account”.
  • You choose a 1-year or 2-year Prime plan. The trial page says it is “Available for 1-year and 2-year Prime plans”. Prime is the most expensive of the three tiers in our pricing records. On the pricing page, only the Prime plans had a Start Free Trial button when we checked. The Basic and Complete plans did not, and neither did any monthly plan. The help center also lists the names “Ultimate Max / Ultra / Complete Max”, which we did not see on the pricing page.
  • You live in one of 15 countries. The help center lists the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. NordVPN’s trial page lists only 13 of them. It leaves out Japan and Germany. If you live in either country, check that the trial shows at checkout before you count on it.
  • You pay by credit card or PayPal. NordVPN says other methods “will grey out the free-trial option”. It names Google Pay, UnionPay, Sofort and cryptocurrencies. If you have no credit card, choose PayPal. The trial page says you can try the VPN “with no credit card by selecting PayPal”.

You pay nothing during the 7 days. NordVPN still takes your payment details at the start, because the plan begins on its own when the trial ends.

The trial unlocks every feature of the plan you choose. The trial page lists protection for 10 devices at once, Dark Web Monitor and NordVPN’s next-gen antivirus. The antivirus runs on Windows and macOS.

Step by step: start the NordVPN free trial

  1. Check the four conditions above. If you miss one, skip to the money-back guarantee section further down.
  2. Open NordVPN’s trial page and choose Start Free Trial. The page is at nordvpn.com/risk-free-vpn. The button opens the pricing page with the trial plans marked “7-day free trial”.
  3. Pick the 1-year or 2-year Prime plan. Each trial plan says “$0.00 today”. It also shows the amount you will be charged when the trial ends. Write that amount down. It is what you pay if you do not cancel.
  4. Enter a credit card or PayPal. If the trial option turns grey, you chose another payment method. Switch to a card or PayPal.
  5. Install the app and log in. NordVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. Install it on each device you want to test. The help center says you get “full access to all features and VPN servers included in the subscription of your choice”.

Step by step: cancel the trial before day 7

NordVPN’s trial page and help center give the same three steps:

  1. Log in to your Nord Account at my.nordaccount.com.
  2. Click Billing in the left-hand menu.
  3. Under Subscriptions, click Cancel next to Free trial.

Do this before the seventh day. NordVPN’s pages do not say whether the VPN keeps working until day 7 after you cancel. So finish your tests first, then cancel.

Deleting the app does not cancel the trial. The trial belongs to your Nord Account, so cancel it there.

What happens if you do not cancel

Your plan starts on its own when the 7 days end. NordVPN charges the card or PayPal account you entered. The help center says you pay “the price shown when you started the trial”. The trial page adds that this price includes “any applicable savings”. Before the plan starts, NordVPN emails you a reminder of the price and conditions.

It is one payment for the whole term. When we checked, the trial plans covered 15 or 27 months, because NordVPN’s current offer adds 3 extra months.

After that first term, the plan renews. NordVPN’s trial page says the price then “will depend on several factors (like available offers and the duration of your new term)”. NordVPN’s 2-year plans renew at a higher price than the first term costs. Our NordVPN pricing page lists every price and renewal figure NordVPN prints, with the date we checked it. To stop the renewal later, turn off auto-renewal on the same Billing page. Our cancel NordVPN guide shows how.

Google Play and app-store purchases

The 7-day trial is a website offer. NordVPN’s trial page says it “is not available when buying through the App or Google Play stores”.

Android users have a separate option. NordVPN offers a 3-day free trial to first-time Android users who download the app from Google Play. It is one trial per customer. Google Play runs it under its own terms of service, so questions about it go to Google. It is not offered in Bangladesh, India, South Korea or Sri Lanka.

Cancel the Google Play trial in Google Play, not in your Nord Account. Google’s help page gives these steps:

  1. On your Android device, go to subscriptions in Google Play.
  2. Select the NordVPN subscription.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.

Google warns that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription.

Refunds for store purchases depend on where you paid. NordVPN’s refund policy sets out each case:

  • Apple App Store: Apple decides under its own refund policy. NordVPN cannot refund these payments.
  • Amazon Appstore: contact Amazon.
  • Google Play: ask NordVPN support within the 30 days. If you paid in the last 48 hours, you can also ask Google Play directly.
  • Shops and online resellers: contact the seller.

The 30-day money-back guarantee: the route for everyone else

If you do not qualify for the trial, the money-back guarantee is the way to test NordVPN. You pay first, then ask for your money back within 30 days. Every plan card on the pricing page lists the guarantee, including Basic and the monthly plans.

The guarantee has three limits:

  • It covers only your first purchase. NordVPN says a renewed subscription is “no longer eligible for a refund under this policy (unless local laws require otherwise)”.
  • You get one refund. A payment does not qualify if a refund for your first payment was already issued.
  • Apple handles refunds for App Store purchases.

To ask for a refund, open NordVPN’s live chat. Support sends you a link. Open it, confirm it is you, and click Refund next to the payment. Choose a reason and confirm. NordVPN says processing can take up to 4 hours. The money can take up to 10 business days to reach your account.

NordVPN calls the guarantee “separate from our free trial”. Its pages do not say how the 30 days apply to the first payment after a trial. The Prime trial plans on the pricing page also list the guarantee. If you plan to rely on both, ask live chat before your trial ends.

Other providers handle trials in different ways. Surfshark offers a 7-day trial on its 12- and 24-month plans, on up to 3 devices. ExpressVPN has no trial on its website, only a 30-day guarantee for first-time users. Its 3-day trial runs in its iOS and Android apps. Proton VPN has a free plan instead of a trial. Our page on VPN free trials compares the options.

Expected result

Once the trial starts, the Billing page in your Nord Account lists Free trial under Subscriptions, with a Cancel button next to it. The apps connect with every feature of your plan. You pay nothing on the day you sign up.

Before the trial ends, NordVPN emails you the price and conditions of the plan that is about to start. If you cancel in time, the plan does not start and you are not charged. If you do not cancel, NordVPN charges the payment method you entered for the whole term.

What to test during the 7 days

Seven days is short. Test the things that would make you leave.

  • Speed on your own connection. Run your usual speed test with the VPN on and off. Our lab has not measured NordVPN’s speed yet.
  • The connection itself. Our is my VPN working check shows the country your connection appears to come from. If the app will not connect, our NordVPN not connecting guide lists the fixes.
  • Streaming. NordVPN’s own pages claim only “Netflix Originals”, through SmartDNS, its DNS feature for smart TVs. Our NordVPN and Netflix guide explains the setup. Our guide to changing your Netflix region explains what Netflix allows.
  • Every device you own. The plan covers 10 devices at once. Install it on your phones, computers and the TV you watch on.

Speed: not yet tested in our lab. We are building an automated test lab that will measure throughput, latency, connection time and leaks every night from three locations. Until those results exist we publish no speed claims for any provider and exclude speed from the score. Read how we test.

Troubleshooting

  • The trial option is greyed out. You chose a payment method other than a credit card or PayPal. Go back and pick one of those two. NordVPN’s pages name only credit cards. If a debit card does not show the trial, use PayPal.
  • There is no trial option at all. Check the conditions in order. You may have picked a Basic, Complete or monthly plan. Only Prime showed the trial when we checked. You may live outside the 15 countries. You may have had a NordVPN subscription before. Or you may be buying inside an app, where the 7-day trial is not offered.
  • You cannot find the Cancel button. You may be logged in to a different Nord Account. Log in with the email address on your sign-up receipt. If you started the trial in Google Play, cancel it there instead.
  • You were charged after the trial. The trial ended before you canceled. Contact NordVPN’s live chat at once. Ask whether the payment qualifies for the 30-day money-back guarantee, since NordVPN’s pages do not answer that for trials.
  • There is no Refund button. NordVPN’s refund policy gives three reasons. The payment is more than 30 days old, a first payment was already refunded, or the payment is for a renewal. If you think the automatic decision is wrong under your local law, live chat will review your case.
  • The Google Play trial is not offered. It is only for first-time Android users, and it is not available in Bangladesh, India, South Korea or Sri Lanka. Google Play manages it, so ask Google about it.

Frequently asked questions

Does NordVPN have a free trial?
Yes. New customers in 15 countries can try a 1-year or 2-year Prime plan free for 7 days, with a credit card or PayPal on file. The plan starts on its own unless you cancel in your Nord Account before day 7. First-time Android users in most countries can also get a 3-day trial through Google Play.
Can I get the NordVPN free trial without a credit card?
Yes, with PayPal. The trial accepts only a credit card or PayPal. Other methods, such as Google Pay, UnionPay, Sofort and cryptocurrencies, grey out the free-trial option at checkout. You still pay nothing until the 7 days are over.
What happens when the NordVPN free trial ends?
If you have not canceled, the plan you chose starts and NordVPN charges your card or PayPal. You pay the price shown when you started the trial, in one payment for the whole term. NordVPN emails you a reminder of the price and conditions before the plan starts.
How do I cancel the NordVPN free trial?
Log in to your Nord Account and click Billing in the left-hand menu. Under Subscriptions, click Cancel next to Free trial. Do it before day 7. If you started the 3-day trial in Google Play, cancel it in Google Play instead. Deleting the app does not cancel either trial.
Is the free trial the same as NordVPN's money-back guarantee?
No. NordVPN calls its 30-day money-back guarantee separate from the trial. The trial costs nothing if you cancel in time. The guarantee refunds your first payment if you ask within 30 days. Apple, not NordVPN, decides refunds for App Store purchases.
Can I use the NordVPN free trial twice?
No. NordVPN offers the trial once, to first-time customers with a new Nord Account. If you have had a NordVPN subscription before, you cannot get it again. NordVPN suggests its monthly plan if you want to try the service a second time.
